See who AI recommends, why, and how to get in

CiteWhy is a free GEO tool that measures your AI visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode. It asks your keyword like a real buyer, follows the whole buyer's journey and shows you who gets recommended, which sources decide it, and what to do next.

No subscription. You only pay API usage, typically a few dollars per analysis.

    The story

My newest tool outgrew this site

Every tool on mkrisseo.com started as an experiment: a question I had about search, turned into something I could run. CiteWhy started the same way. I wanted to know why AI kept recommending some brands and skipping others.

But the answer could not be found in a single prompt. AI answers change from run to run, the AI asks follow up questions, and the sources behind each name matter more than the name itself. To do it properly, the tool needed three AI platforms, repeated runs, Google top 10 data, and reports you can hand to a client in three languages.

At that point it was no longer an experiment. It was a product, and it deserved its own home. So CiteWhy lives on its own domain: citewhy.com.

    The problem

Your buyers ask AI. The answer only has room for a few names.

More and more buyers skip the search results and ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Mode directly: "Which SEO tool should I choose?", "Which e-bike is best for commuting?", "Which accountant fits a small business?" They do not get ten blue links. They get one answer with a handful of brands. If you are not one of them, you do not exist in that conversation.

AI visibility is decided across the buyer's journey

The first answer is only the start. CiteWhy follows the conversation the way a real buyer would, and shows exactly where you drop out.

    1. 1

      The question

"What is the best SEO tool?"

    2. 2

      AI asks back

"What is your budget, and what do you need it for?"

    3. 3

      The buyer narrows it

"Under $50 a month, mostly rank tracking."

    4. 4

      The shortlist

Three or four brands. The rest are gone.

In the example analysis, Screaming Frog appears in 37% of answers and is strong on crawling and technical issues. The moment the buyer asks about rank tracking or keyword research, it disappears completely. A rank tracker never catches that drop.

    What you get

    One analysis, three answers

    Who gets mentioned?

Your share of AI answers side by side with competitors. In total and for each AI platform separately.

    Why?

The sources AI builds its answers on: comparisons, review sites, forums and media. Plus the follow up questions that decide who makes the shortlist.

    What should I do?

A prioritized action plan, with every task labelled as website work or PR work.

    of answers mention Semrush

    01

Each AI has its own favourite

Gemini mentions Ahrefs most often (89%). ChatGPT and AI Mode put Semrush on top (94% and 81%). Measure only one platform and you get a skewed picture.

    02

    Brands drop out mid journey

Screaming Frog is in 37% of answers but vanishes as soon as the buyer asks about rank tracking or keyword research.

    03

One piece of work, several channels

29 sources are used by at least two AIs, and 27 of them also rank in Google's top 10. Zapier.com is used by all three and mentions Semrush 12 times, Screaming Frog only 7.

The finished report is written from Screaming Frog's point of view, with findings, quotes from AI answers and recommendations. Download it as PDF.

    Why not a rank tracker?

AI answers do not have positions
